Do you need to program your BMW key fob, but you’re not sure where to start? The team at the Princeton BMW service center is here to help. Our BMW key programmer guide covers both basic methods: one for when you already have a working key but want to program additional keys, and the other for when you need to begin the process without a key that works.

BMW Key Programmer Guide: Additional BMW Key Fobs

If you already have a BMW key fob that is currently working and you simply want to program an additional BMW key fob, follow the instructions listed below:

  1. Take the working BMW key fob plus the others you want to program inside the car. Close all of the doors and windows.
  2. Insert the working key into the ignition. Turn it to position 1 (You want to turn it without starting the engine). The dashboard lights and accessories should turn on.
  3. Turn the key back and take it out of the ignition.
  4. Take the BMW key fob that already works and hold down the unlock button while pressing the lock button (the BMW logo) 3 times. Let go of the unlock button. The doors should lock and unlock automatically.
  5. Take your new BMW key fob and hold down the unlock button while pressing the BMW logo 3 times. When this is complete, let go of the unlock button. Once again, you will see the doors lock and unlock automatically. This is a sign that the programming process is complete.

BMW Key Programmer Guide: New Key Fob

If you recently had a BMW key fob replacement and you need to program a key without a working key, use this guide:

  1. Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to position 1 and back quickly 5 times.
  2. Take the key out of the ignition.
  3. Hold the unlock button and press the BMW logo 3 times. Let go of the unlock button.
  4. If you have more than one BMW key fob that you would like to program at this time, repeat step 3 within 30 seconds from the original key programming.
  5. To complete the programming process, turn the key in the ignition and start the car.
